Philanthropy that funds what takes years to prove.

Major gifts let us plan for systemic change in the food system, not just the next publication. They fund work that takes years to land, and pays off for decades.

Be part of our mission

Questionmark is the Dutch authority driving change in the food system. We're one of the few organisations working across three themes, health, environment and human rights, from both sides: consumer and producer. Supermarkets and governments are the most influential players in that system. Our research turns data into actionable insights: we educate and move supermarkets, and we advise governments. Across Europe's nine largest retail markets, our work contributes to better health, a stable climate, thriving biodiversity, and a fairer society.

Our impact

Our research doesn't stay on the page. Across health, environmental sustainability, and human rights, our insights turn into actual movement: in 2026, the Dutch Ministry of Health launched a monitor for healthy supermarket sales, expanding the existing sustainability dashboard, a direct result of our benchmarks. A joint workshop with the Ministry and the Robin Food Coalition led to concrete expansion plans from Albert Heijn and Farm Dairy on organic products. Jumbo committed to a living income for all private label cocoa by 2029. These are just a few examples from a much longer list.

Our findings also feed directly into the work of NGO partners, who translate our data into campaigns that reach the wider public and keep the pressure on. This is what a healthier, fairer food system looks like in practice, and it touches everyone who shops, works, or grows food within it. Being part of that shift makes a lasting difference.

What makes a major gift different

A major donation lets you shape impact beyond the everyday gift

  • Your choice of theme: health, environment, or human rights
  • Tax-deductible through our ANBI status
  • Direct contact with our team, not a call centre
  • Twelve years of proven results to build on, not a bet on something new
  • Multi-year projects not one-off publications
  • Full transparency with your gift's impact reflected in our annual report

You'd be joining a group of funders, from philanthropic foundations to individual donors, who back Questionmark because they've seen the results hold up over time.

Ways to give

Some people want to make one significant gift and see exactly where it lands. Others prefer to commit over several years, backing a theme they care about as it develops. And some choose to leave something behind through their will, often alongside what they leave to family. Here are the ways people usually give:

  • One-time major gift: high impact funding with total flexibility. One conversation, a clear outcome
  • Multi-year commitment: strategic support aligned with a theme as it develops over time.
  • Legacy giving: including Questionmark in your will, to build a better food system for generations to come

What it funds

Every gift lands somewhere concrete. Here's what philanthropic support at this level is making possible.

  • Structural growth: multi-year funding allows us to invest in long term strategy, instead of restarting from scratch every grant cycle
  • Full benchmark cycles: Covers everything from data collection to retailer engagement that turns insights into practice, plus the media coverage that maintains public pressure.
  • Collaboration between retailers, suppliers, and regulators: bringing parties together that wouldn't otherwise sit at the same table.
  • Stronger policy advice: Driving policy shifts, so progress doesn't depend on goodwill alone
  • Our independence: publishing honest findings, funded by donors, not by the sector we investigate.

Independent by design

Our research runs on independent funding: donations from philanthropic funds, civil society partners, and people like you who believe the food system can change. Your support keeps us asking the right questions.
