UK Junk food ad ban to protect kids' health

Children will be protected from exposure to junk food ads under new regulations, in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.

This is part of a set of regulations which have come into force over the past years.

  • Placement of unhealthy food: No unhealthy food at the checkout and at the head of supermarket aisles.
  • Promotion of unhealthy food: No multi-buy promotions (1+1 free, 5 for the price of 4) on foods high in fat, salt and sugar.

And now?

  • Advertisement of unhealthy food: adverts for less healthy food and drinks will no longer be shown on television before 9pm, and online at all times.

Advertising has been shown to influence what and when children eat, shaping preferences from a young age and increasing the risk of obesity and related illnesses.

The Netherlands has been working on regulations to limit marketing to children for a long time, but have experienced delays for years.
