German discount retailer secures the top spot in Europe’s sustainability race with a strategic climate plan

Market failure: emissions at many retailers continue to rise

The German retail chain Lidl has emerged as a sustainability front-runner in four countries—including Germany—in the benchmark Superlist Environment Europe. With a detailed roadmap for emissions reduction, the discounter is the only domestic retailer to provide operational transparency and reliability. The key to this success lies in expanding protein diversity in the shopping basket—the greatest lever supermarkets have to reduce their overall emissions.

Compared with the national ranking Superlist Environment Germany, Rewe was able to overtake Aldi Süd thanks to its climate plan and expansion of protein offerings. Meanwhile, emissions at many retailers continue to rise. This reveals that voluntary efforts by individual market players are not sufficient and underscores the urgency of industry-wide targets.
