Belgian supermarkets fall short on ensuring fair pay for workers and farmers
Supermarkets are falling short in their efforts to ensure fair pay for farmers and workers within their supply chains. This is the conclusion of Superlist Social, a benchmark comparing the human rights policies of Belgian and Dutch supermarkets. While supermarkets are well aware of the significant risks of abuses—such as child labor and extreme poverty—in their supply chains, their actions remain inconsistent. Although they are making strides toward fair wages in banana and cocoa supply chains, an integrated approach for all high-risk products is still missing. From frontrunner Lidl to laggard Carrefour, all supermarkets need to step up their game.
