Sustainability Dashboard: Dutch government monitors retailers’ sustainability performance

In 2024 the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality launched a public dashboard that provides insight into supermarkets' progress on sustainability. The ministry used Questionmark's knowledge and expertise, in particular that within the Superlist program, in developing the dashboard. Moreover, Questionmark supports the ministry in assessing support for the new dashboard with Dutch civil society.

How do German supermarkets take responsibility for environmental sustainability?

Some of Europe’s largest retailers are located in Germany. They have major influence ánd great potential to drive environmental sustainability in the sector.

Following the previous edition in 2025, this second edition of the benchmark will compare Germany's largest retailers on their efforts on climate plans, protein transition and sustainable agriculture. This includes Aldi Süd, Aldi Nord, Edeka, Kaufland, Lidl and Rewe.

Which efforts do Dutch supermarkets make to encourage increase the sales of organic food?

Benchmark Bio 2026

The current form of agriculture in Europe is unsustainable; emissions of greenhouse gases, ammonia, particulate matter, and pesticides have significant harmful impacts on the climate, water, and biodiversity. Agriculture must modernise to better protect ecological boundaries. A key component of this modernisation is the EU’s objective to increase the organic farmland to 25% by 2030. The Dutch government has translated this into an ambition of 15% organic farmland in the Netherlands. Currently, this stands at approximately 4%.

To achieve this, it is crucial that the demand for organic agricultural products grows. Increasing demand helps both the industry and farmers to invest in the transition.

The Benchmark Bio is an interim assessment within the Superlist program, focusing exclusively on the topic of organic. In this project, Questionmark compares the largest Dutch supermarkets on their efforts to stimulate the sale of organic products.

This Superlist Health researches the role Sweden’s largest supermarkets play in creating a healthy food environment. This role is assessed based on the share and type of promotions specifically aimed at unhealthy food.

The supermarkets with the largest market share are researched: Coop, Hemköp, ICA and Willys.
